• Soil erosion is the washing or blowing away of the soil cover, faster than it can form, by running water and wind.
• Sheet erosion: rain washes a thin layer of topsoil off a whole bare slope at once.
• Gully erosion: running water cuts deep channels into clayey soil; land cut up by gullies is bad land (Chambal ravines).
• Deforestation, overgrazing, mining and ploughing up and down a slope all speed erosion.
• Contour ploughing: ploughing along the contour lines slows water flowing down a slope.
• Terrace farming: steps cut into a hill, as in the Western and Central Himalaya, hold the soil and the water.
• Strip cropping: strips of grass left between crop strips break the wind and catch soil.
• Shelter belts: rows of trees planted across the wind stabilised sand dunes and the deserts of western India.
• Wind erosion is worst on dry, bare, loose soil; plant cover is the best protection.
