• A true solution is uniform and its particles are smaller than 1 nm: it is clear and light passes straight through.
• A colloid looks uniform, but its particles (about 1 to 1000 nm) scatter light, so the beam shows: the Tyndall effect.
• A suspension has particles larger than 1000 nm that you can see; they scatter light and settle when left to stand.
• Milk, fog, smoke and starch in water are colloids; muddy water and chalk in water are suspensions.
• Solution and colloid particles pass through filter paper; suspension particles are held back as a residue.
• Colloid particles never settle: the constant bumping of the liquid molecules keeps them moving (Brownian motion).
• Sunlight slanting through a dusty room or through fog shows the Tyndall effect in everyday life.
• Particle size decides it: solution below 1 nm, colloid 1 to 1000 nm, suspension bigger than 1000 nm.
