• In vegetative propagation a new plant grows from a root, stem or leaf of the parent, without seeds.
• A potato tuber is a swollen stem; each eye is a bud that can sprout into a complete new plant.
• Bryophyllum grows buds in the notches of its leaf margin; each bud roots and drops off as a new plant.
• A stem cutting with a few nodes, planted in moist soil, grows roots from the buried node and new shoots above.
• In layering, a low branch is bent down and covered with soil; once it has rooted it is cut from the parent.
• In grafting, a cut shoot (scion) is fixed onto the rooted stem of another plant (stock); they join and grow as one.
• Plants grown this way are identical to the parent, bear flowers and fruit sooner, and can be made from seedless plants.
