Background

In 1604 the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) ended with a peace treaty between Spain and England, but the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the United Provinces was still unfolding. By then, in the naval camp, Spain was weakened, lacked ships and money, while Dutch naval power had emerged from the first beggars of the sea. Now the Dutch were able to launch counterattacks with their naval forces to the Iberian Peninsula or overseas territories. The Portuguese Empire, at that time, adhered to the Spanish Empire, would be the main one affected by the emerging Dutch naval power.
