The Bernstein–von Mises theorem links Bayesian inference with frequentist inference. It assumes there is some true probabilistic process that generates the observations, as in frequentism, and then studies the quality of Bayesian methods of recovering that process, and making uncertainty statements about that process. In particular, it states that asymptotically, many Bayesian credible sets of a certain credibility level α will act as confidence sets of confidence level α, which allows for the interpretation of Bayesian credible sets in frequentist terms.

Statement

Let (Pθ:θ∈Θ) be a well-specified statistical model, where the parameter space Θ is a subset of Rk. Further, let data X1,…,Xn∈X be independently and identically distributed from Pθ0. Suppose that all of the following conditions hold:

  1. The model admits densities (pθ:θ∈Θ) with respect to some measure μ.
  2. The Fisher information matrix I(θ0) is nonsingular.
  3. The model is differentiable in quadratic mean. That is, there exists a measurable function f:X→Rk such that∫[pθ(x)−pθ0(x)−12(θ−θ0)⊤f(x)pθ0(x)]2dμ(x)=o(||θ−θ0||2) as θ→θ0.
  4. For every ε>0, there exists a sequence of test functions ϕn:Xn→[0,1] such that EX∼Pθ0n[ϕn(X)]→0 and supθ:||θ−θ0||>εEX∼Pθn[1−ϕn(X)]→0 as n→∞.
  5. The prior measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure in a neighborhood of θ0, with a continuous positive density at θ0.

Then for any estimator θ^n satisfying n(θ^n−θ0)→dN(0,I−1(θ0)), the posterior distribution Πn of θ∣X1,…,Xn satisfies

||Πn−N(θ^n,1nI−1(θ0))||TV→Pθ00.

as n→∞.
