Statement

Carathéodory's criterion: Let λ∗:P(Rn)→[0,∞] denote the Lebesgue outer measure on Rn, where P(Rn) denotes the power set of Rn, and let M⊆Rn. Then M is Lebesgue measurable if and only if λ∗(S)=λ∗(S∩M)+λ∗(S∩Mc) for every S⊆Rn, where Mc denotes the complement of M. Notice that S is not required to be a measurable set.
