C. S. Rangarajan is the head priest associated with Chilkur Balaji Temple and has been a prominent public voice on matters concerning temple administration, religious practice, and the management of Hindu temples. The temple is notable for its distinctive administrative and devotional practices. It does not maintain a hundi for monetary offerings and is known for its policy of treating devotees equally without separate VIP or privileged darshan arrangements.. The only other such Hindu temples are the Jalaram temple in Virpur (Rajkot), Gujarat and "Ramanuj Kot", a temple in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.“The temple has historically maintained an independent administrative status and has been associated with efforts to remain outside direct government administration. Its management and religious practices have been discussed publicly in the context of temple autonomy and the administration of Hindu religious institutions.

Religious and Social Equality

The temple's religious administration has emphasised equal access to devotees. Its chief priest has also participated in public initiatives promoting social equality, including an event in which a Dalit devotee was ceremonially carried into the Ranganatha Swamy Temple.
