Basic definition

The most common definition of elliptic coordinates (μ,ν) is

x=acosh⁡μcos⁡νy=asinh⁡μsin⁡ν

where μ is a nonnegative real number and ν∈[0,2π].

On the complex plane, an equivalent relationship is

x+iy=acosh⁡(μ+iν)

These definitions correspond to ellipses and hyperbolae. The trigonometric identity

x2a2cosh2⁡μ+y2a2sinh2⁡μ=cos2⁡ν+sin2⁡ν=1

shows that curves of constant μ form ellipses, whereas the hyperbolic trigonometric identity

x2a2cos2⁡ν−y2a2sin2⁡ν=cosh2⁡μ−sinh2⁡μ=1

shows that curves of constant ν form hyperbolae.

Scale factors

In an orthogonal coordinate system the lengths of the basis vectors are known as scale factors. The scale factors for the elliptic coordinates (μ,ν) are equal to

hμ=hν=asinh2⁡μ+sin2⁡ν=acosh2⁡μ−cos2⁡ν.

Using the double argument identities for hyperbolic functions and trigonometric functions, the scale factors can be equivalently expressed as

hμ=hν=a12(cosh⁡2μ−cos⁡2ν).

Consequently, an infinitesimal element of area equals

dA=hμhνdμdν=a2(sinh2⁡μ+sin2⁡ν)dμdν=a2(cosh2⁡μ−cos2⁡ν)dμdν=a22(cosh⁡2μ−cos⁡2ν)dμdν

and the Laplacian reads

∇2Φ=1a2(sinh2⁡μ+sin2⁡ν)(∂2Φ∂μ2+∂2Φ∂ν2)=1a2(cosh2⁡μ−cos2⁡ν)(∂2Φ∂μ2+∂2Φ∂ν2)=2a2(cosh⁡2μ−cos⁡2ν)(∂2Φ∂μ2+∂2Φ∂ν2)

Other differential operators such as ∇⋅F and ∇×F can be expressed in the coordinates (μ,ν) by substituting the scale factors into the general formulae found in orthogonal coordinates.
