The population of Kaduna was estimated at 760,084 as of the 2006 Nigerian census. Rapid urbanisation since 2005 has created an increasingly large population, and as of 2024, the city has an estimated population of 1.2 million people.

Etymology

The word Kaduna is said to be a corruption of the Hausa word Kadduna (crocodile, kaduna being the plural form). The name may also be linked to the Gbagyi word Odna, meaning "river".
