Extension of classes

Let K be an algebraic number field, called the base field, and let L/K be a field extension of finite degree. Let OK,IK,PK and OL,IL,PL denote the ring of integers, the group of nonzero fractional ideals and its subgroup of principal fractional ideals of the fields K,L respectively. Then the extension map of fractional ideals

{ιL/K:IK→ILa↦aOL

is an injective group homomorphism. Since ιL/K(PK)⊆PL, this map induces the extension homomorphism of ideal class groups

{jL/K:IK/PK→IL/PLaPK↦(aOL)PL

If there exists a non-principal ideal a∈IK (i.e. aPK≠PK) whose extension ideal in L is principal (i.e. aOL=AOL for some A∈OL and (aOL)PL=(AOL)PL=PL), then we speak about principalization or capitulation in L/K. In this case, the ideal a and its class aPK are said to principalize or capitulate in L. This phenomenon is described most conveniently by the principalization kernel or capitulation kernel, that is the kernel ker⁡(jL/K) of the class extension homomorphism.

More generally, let m=m0m∞ be a modulus in K, where m0 is a nonzero ideal in OK and m∞ is a formal product of pair-wise different real infinite primes of K. Then

SK,m=⟨αOK|α≡1modm⟩≤IK(m),

is the ray modulo m, where IK(m)=IK(m0) is the group of nonzero fractional ideals in K relatively prime to m0 and the condition α≡1modm means α≡1modm0 and v(α)>0 for every real infinite prime v dividing m∞. Let SK,m≤H≤IK(m), then the group IK(m)/H is called a generalized ideal class group for m. If IK(mK)/HK and IL(mL)/HL are generalized ideal class groups such that aOL∈IL(mL) for every a∈IK(mK) and aOL∈HL for every a∈HK, then ιL/K induces the extension homomorphism of generalized ideal class groups:

{jL/K:IK(mK)/HK→IL(mL)/HLaHK↦(aOL)HL
