The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean north of the equator and west of the International Date Line. Storms forming east of the date line are called hurricanes; (see 1996 Pacific hurricane season). Tropical Storms in the western pacific basin were assigned names by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and tropical depressions were given a "W" suffix after their numerical designation. Additionally, tropical depressions that formed within or entered the Philippine area of responsibility were assigned local names by PAGASA.
