Definition

When a birth occurs, the process goes from state n to n + 1. When a death occurs, the process goes from state n to state n − 1. The process is specified by positive birth rates {λi}i=0…∞ and positive death rates {μi}i=1…∞. The number of individuals in the process at time t is denoted by X(t). The process has the Markov property and Pi,j(t)=P{X(t+s)=j|X(s)=i} describes how X(t) changes through time. For small Δt>0, the function Pi,j(Δt) is assumed to satisfy the following properties:

Pi,i+1(Δt)=λiΔt+o(Δt),i≥0,
Pi,i−1(Δt)=μiΔt+o(Δt),i≥1,
Pi,i(Δt)=1−(λi+μi)Δt+o(Δt),i≥1.

This process is represented by the following figure with the states of the process (i.e. the number of individuals in the population) depicted by the circles, and transitions between states indicated by the arrows.
