Morphology and structure

Dehalococcoides mccartyi is a species of small bacteria which have a flat, disc-like shape. They are usually nonmotile and typically measure around 0.3-1.0μm wide and 0.1-0.2μm in height. A study of a specific Dehalococcoides strain called MB concluded that these cells are commonly disc-shaped and can occur either alone or in pairs. More recent and detailed imaging of D. mccartyi has shown that these cells can also occur in deformed curved or straight shapes with sharp edges. Earlier studies of D. mccartyi showed evidence of irregular indentations in the surface of cells; however, recent Cryo-electron tomography has not been successful in identifying any similar features to those described by these earlier studies, suggesting that these findings were likely caused by sample handling and preparation procedures. Recent microscopic examination efforts have revealed that D. mccartyi possesses a cell envelope that contains a cytoplasmic membrane, as well as a prominent S-layer. Cryo-electron tomography has also revealed that these cells possess bundled cytoskeletal filaments and short surface appendages that appear to be consistent and connected with their prominent S-layers.
