The discrete spectrum can also be defined as the set of normal eigenvalues.

Definition

A point λ∈C in the spectrum σ(A) of a closed linear operator A:B→B in the Banach space B with domain D(A)⊂B is said to belong to the discrete spectrum σd(A) of A if the following two conditions are satisfied:

  1. λ is an isolated point in σ(A);
  2. The rank of the corresponding Riesz projector Pλ=12πi∮Γ(zIB−A)−1dz is finite.

Here, IB is the identity operator in the Banach space B, and Γ⊂C is a simple closed counterclockwise-oriented curve bounding an open region Ω⊂C such that λ is the only point of the spectrum of A in the closure of Ω; that is, σ(A)∩Ω¯={λ}.
