Definition

Let C be a category, let Z and Y be objects of C, and let C have all binary products with Y. An object ZY together with a morphism eval:(ZY×Y)→Z is an exponential object if for any object X and morphism g:X×Y→Z there is a unique morphism λg:X→ZY (called the transpose of g) such that the following diagram commutes:

This assignment of a unique λg to each g establishes an isomorphism (bijection) of hom-sets, Hom(X×Y,Z)≅Hom(X,ZY).

If ZYexists for all objects Z,Y in C, then the functor (−)Y:C→C defined on objects by Z↦ZY and on arrows by (f:X→Z)↦(fY:XY→ZY), is a right adjoint to the product functor −×Y. For this reason, the morphisms λg and g are sometimes called exponential adjoints of one another.

Equational definition

Alternatively, the exponential object may be defined through equations:

  • Existence of λg is guaranteed by existence of the operation λ−.
  • Commutativity of the diagrams above is guaranteed by the equality ∀g:X×Y→Z,eval∘(λg×idY)=g.
  • Uniqueness of λg is guaranteed by the equality ∀h:X→ZY,λ(eval∘(h×idY))=h.

Universal property

The exponential ZY is given by a universal morphism from the product functor −×Y to the object Z. This universal morphism consists of an object ZY and a morphism eval:(ZY×Y)→Z.
