Origins

Matthew 1:23 refers to the prophecy written in Isaiah 7:14, rendering the name Immanuel (Emmanuel, עִמָּנוּאֵל) as 'God with us':

— Matthew 1:23, Westcott and Hort

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

— Matthew 1:23, King James Version

— Matthew 1:23, Luther Bible
