Through Group (mathematics) and Algorithm

Definition

The following definition is commonly used in most academic papers.

Let Fq be a finite field over prime q, G1,G2 two additive cyclic groups of prime order q, and GT another cyclic group of order q written multiplicatively. A pairing is a map: e:G1×G2→GT, which satisfies the following properties:

Bilinearity
∀a,b∈Fq∗,P∈G1,Q∈G2:e(aP,bQ)=e(P,Q)ab
Non-degeneracy
If P generates G1 and Q generates G2, then e(P,Q) generates GT (i.e., e(P,Q)≠1).
Computability
There exists an efficient algorithm to compute e.
