Decomposing the quater-imaginary

In a positional system with base b,

…d3d2d1d0.d−1d−2d−3…

represents⋯+d3⋅b3+d2⋅b2+d1⋅b+d0+d−1⋅b−1+d−2⋅b−2+d−3⋅b−3…

In this numeral system, b=2i,

and because (2i)2=−4, the entire series of powers can be separated into two different series, so that it simplifies to [⋯+d4⋅(−4)2+d2⋅(−4)1+d0+d−2⋅(−4)−1+…] for even-numbered digits (digits that simplify to the value of the digit times a power of -4), and 2i⋅[⋯+d3⋅(−4)1+d1+d−1⋅(−4)−1+d−3⋅(−4)−2+…] for those digits that still have an imaginary factor. Adding these two series together then gives the total value of the number.

Because of the separation of these two series, the real and imaginary parts of complex numbers are readily expressed in base −4 as …d4d2d0.d−2… and 2⋅(…d5d3d1.d−1d−3…) respectively.
