Etymology

Ross island was earlier named by the British colonial ruler of India after marine surveyor, Daniel Ross (1780-1849). In December 2018, it was officially renamed as 'Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island' as a tribute to Indian nationalist Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (1897–1945).
