Through Gender, Marriage and Leonardo da Vinci

Some couples in same-sex relationships have children, both biological or non-biological, such as adoptive or foster children, and parent them with their partner.

Same-gender or same-sex marriage refers to the institutionalized recognition of such relationships in the form of a marriage; civil unions exist in some countries where same-sex marriage does not.

Terminology

Historically, same-sex relationships have been referred to as homosexual relationships, gay relationships, or lesbian relationships. This led to exclusion of other members of the LGBTQ+ community and has been described as a form of bisexual or transgender erasure, erasing populations within the LGBTQ+ community.

The 21st century has seen a shift in the language and culture of sex and gender. The phrase same-gender relationship is commonly used synonymously with same-sex relationship, with either phrase being used to reference relationships between people of the same sex or gender interchangeably.

Moving from same-sex relationship to same-gender relationship has been described as removing restrictions on the individuals in a same-gender relationship imposed by sexual orientation, as gender identification is a spectrum.
