Background

An understanding of the computations involved is greatly enhanced by a study of the statistical value

E⁡(X2), where E is the expected value operator.

For a random variable X with mean μ and variance σ2,

σ2=E⁡(X2)−μ2.

(Its derivation is shown here.) Therefore,

E⁡(X2)=σ2+μ2.

From the above, the following can be derived:

E⁡(∑(X2))=nσ2+nμ2,
E⁡((∑X)2)=nσ2+n2μ2.
