Etymology and names

The word Tirumala is of Tamil origin. The prefix "Tiru" is a widely recognised Tamil word and is used in many South Indian place names. It roughly translates to "sacred mountain".

Tirumala is mentioned as Adivarahakshetram in early literature, which is derived from its association with Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu. It is also sometimes known by the epithet "Bhuloka Vaikuntha" in reference to the abode of Vishnu on the Earth.
