Through Mathematics and Distribution (mathematical analysis)

The term white noise was first used for signals with a flat spectrum.

White noise measure

The white noise probability measure μ on the space S′(R) of tempered distributions has the characteristic function

C(f)=∫S′(R)exp⁡(i⟨ω,f⟩)dμ(ω)=exp⁡(−12∫Rf2(t)dt),f∈S(R).

Brownian motion in white noise analysis

A version of Wiener's Brownian motion B(t) is obtained by the dual pairing

B(t)=⟨ω,11[0,t)⟩,

where 11[0,t) is the indicator function of the interval [0,t). Informally

B(t)=∫0tω(t)dt

and in a generalized sense

ω(t)=dB(t)dt.
