Topics

• pH measures how acidic or basic a solution is on a scale of 0 to 14; 7 is neutral, like pure water.
• The lower the pH below 7, the stronger the acid; the higher the pH above 7, the stronger the base.
• Gastric juice is about pH 1, lemon juice 2, milk 6, baking soda solution 8, soap 9, sodium hydroxide 14.
• Blue litmus turns red in an acid and red litmus turns blue in a base. Litmus is extracted from lichen.
• Universal indicator gives a different colour at each pH: red for acids, green at 7, blue to violet for bases.
• Tooth decay starts when the pH in the mouth falls below 5.5: bacteria make acid from leftover sugar.
• Toothpaste is basic, so brushing neutralises the acid in the mouth and protects the enamel.
• Milk of magnesia, a mild base, neutralises excess acid in the stomach: that is what an antacid does.
• Rain with pH below 5.6 is acid rain. Acidic soil is treated with quicklime or slaked lime to raise its pH.
