Etymology

The Oxford English Dictionary records the word "bungee" as being of "unknown origin".

The word "bungee" appears in James Jennings' "Observations of Some of the Dialects in The West of England", published 1825, as meaning "anything thick and squat". However, it is unclear if this relates to the modern definition of the word.

Etymonline records the word "bungee" as emerging from British slang for a rubber eraser, possibly deriving from a portmanteau of "bouncy" and "spongy".

Oxford Living Dictionaries recorded early use of the phrase in 1938 relating to launching of gliders using an elasticated cord, and also as "a long nylon-cased rubber band used for securing luggage".
