Etymology

The name Nagpur is probably taken from Nagavanshis, who ruled in this part of the country. Earlier colonial writers such as Col. Dalton and Blochmann proposed that the term Chhota (small in Hindi) is the misunderstood name of "Chutia", a village in the outskirts of Ranchi, which has the remains of an old fort belonging to the Nagavanshis. However, Ambrish Gautam calls this interpretation as historically weak and speculative. Gautam, based on the writings of Walter Hamilton, argues that British officials likely added the prefix "Chota" (lit. 'small or little') in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to distinguish this plateau region from the larger Nagpur ruled by the Bhonsle Marathas in Central India. Similar interpretation has also been presented by scholars Seema Mamta Minz and Prerna Choubey.
