Through Expected value and Subset

Definition

For random variables X, Y, and Z with support sets X, Y and Z, we define the conditional mutual information as

I(X;Y|Z)=∫ZDKL(P(X,Y)|Z‖PX|Z⊗PY|Z)dPZ

This may be written in terms of the expectation operator: I(X;Y|Z)=EZ[DKL(P(X,Y)|Z‖PX|Z⊗PY|Z)].

Thus I(X;Y|Z) is the expected (with respect to Z) Kullback–Leibler divergence from the conditional joint distribution P(X,Y)|Z to the product of the conditional marginals PX|Z and PY|Z. Compare with the definition of mutual information.
