Etymology

The term is an adopted borrowing, barring the lack of the capitalization, of the German word Kindergarten (German: ), which was coined in 1840 by pedagogue Friedrich Fröbel. It comes from terms Kind ('child') and Garten ('garden'), literally meaning "garden of children", as a "metaphorical sense of "place where children can grow in a natural way". The term is sometimes misspelled as a partial English calque in form of kindergarden.
