Formal definition

Let (X,Σ) and (Y,T) be measurable spaces, meaning that X and Y are sets equipped with respective σ-algebras Σ and T. A function f:X→Y is said to be measurable if for every E∈T the pre-image of E under f is in Σ; that is, for all E∈T f−1(E):={x∈X∣f(x)∈E}∈Σ.

That is, σ(f)⊆Σ, where σ(f) is the σ-algebra generated by f. If f:X→Y is a measurable function, one writes f:(X,Σ)→(Y,T). to emphasize the dependency on the σ-algebras Σ and T.
