Etymology

Meknes is named after an Amazigh (Berber) tribe historically known as the Miknasa (Imeknasen in Amazigh languages).

The tribal name Imeknasen (singular: Amaknas or Amknas) derives from the Berber triconsonantal root KNS, which means "to fight", "to contend", or "to quarrel". Formed with the agent noun prefix m-, the word literally translates to "fighters", "warriors", or "combattants". in modern Standard Moroccan Tamazight, the agent noun ⴰⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ (amknas) has evolved semantically to mean "stubborn" or "headstrong".
