Approximate Hamiltonians

Perturbation theory is an important tool for describing quantum systems without exact solutions. Systems with known exact solutions, such as the hydrogen atom, the quantum harmonic oscillator, and the particle in a box, are idealized and may not adequately describe related systems. Perturbation theory uses known solutions to generate solutions for more complicated systems. The procedure uses approximations to the system Hamiltonian.
