Etymology

Egyptologist Heinrich Karl Brugsch believed that the town was Het-nebset in ancient Egypt. Damietta is an Italian adaptation of the Arabic name Dumyāṭ. The settlement is called Tamiat/Tamiati (Coptic: ⲧⲁⲙⲓⲁϯ Late Coptic: ) in Coptic. The medieval author al-Maqrizi believed that Damietta's name originated from the Syriac language. In medieval Jewish tradition reflected in Geniza documents the city is equated with biblical Capthor (Biblical Hebrew: כפתור) and is called Kapotkya (Biblical Hebrew: קפוטקיא).
