Definition

Let X be a connected and locally simply connected based topological space with base point x, and let p:X~→X be a covering. Define its base fiber F=p−1(x).

Any loop γ:[0,1]→X based at x, can be lifted through the covering map. Any point x~∈F corresponds to a different lift γ~ by setting x~=γ~(0). Denote by γ⋅x~ the endpoint γ~(1), which is generally different from x~.

Given any two γ,γ′ that represent the same element in the fundamental group π1(X,x), the covering homotopy property shows they define the same action γ⋅x~=γ′⋅x~. Thus, we can unambiguously write [γ]⋅x~, where [γ]∈π1(X,x) is the class of loops that are homotopy-equivalent to γ.

This construction gives a well-defined left group action of the fundamental group π1(X,x) on the base fiber Fx, defined by x~↦[γ]⋅x~. This is the monodromy action on Fx. The stabilizer of x~ is p∗(π1(X~,x~)); that is, an element [γ] fixes x~∈F if and only if γ~, the lift of the loop γ, is still a loop.

In general, there could be two kinds of monodromy actions. There could be a curvature-like action, whereby Fx is deformed slightly, in such a way that it can be continuously deformed back to the beginning. There could also be a discrete action, whereby Fx is discontinuously deformed, in such a way that it cannot.

Let Hom⁡(Fx) be the group of homeomorphisms of Fx, and let Is⁡(Fx) be the subgroup of Hom⁡(Fx) consisting of those homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity. That is, Is⁡(Fx) is the component of Hom⁡(Fx) that is path-connected to the identity:Is⁡(Fx)={f∈Hom⁡(Fx)∣∃H:Fx×[0,1]→Fx,H0=id,H1=f,Ht all homeomorphisms }.The image of the induced map π1(X,x)→Hom⁡(Fx)/Is⁡(Fx) is the topological monodromy group. It describes the "discontinuous" part of the action of π1(X,x) on Fx.

As usual in algebraic topology, there is an algebraic version. The homomorphism π1(X,x)→Aut⁡(H∗(Fx)) into the automorphism group on the homology of Fx is the algebraic monodromy. The image of this homomorphism is the (algebraic) monodromy group.
