Functional form

The functional form of the OPLS force field is very similar to that of AMBER:

E(rN)=Ebonds+Eangles+Edihedrals+Enonbonded

Ebonds=∑bondsKr(r−r0)2

Eangles=∑angleskθ(θ−θ0)2

Edihedrals=∑dihedrals(V12[1+cos⁡(ϕ−ϕ1)]+V22[1−cos⁡(2ϕ−ϕ2)]+V32[1+cos⁡(3ϕ−ϕ3)]+V42[1−cos⁡(4ϕ−ϕ4)])

Enonbonded=∑i>jfij(Aijrij12−Cijrij6+qiqje24πϵ0rij)

with the combining rules Aij=AiiAjj and Cij=CiiCjj.

Intramolecular nonbonded interactions Enonbonded are counted only for atoms three or more bonds apart; 1,4 interactions are scaled down by the "fudge factor" fij=0.5, otherwise fij=1.0. All the interaction sites are centered on the atoms; there are no "lone pairs".
