Etymology

"Vientiane" is the French spelling derived from the Lao Viangchan. The name was previously written "ວຽງຈັນທນ໌" and later sometimes written "ວຽງຈັນ". In Lao, viang (ວຽງ) refers to a 'walled city' with ຈັນ chan of two homonyms:

  • one shortened from ຈັນທນ໌ deriving from Sanskrit: चन्दन candana (pronounced ) 'sandalwood' thus translated as the 'walled city of sandalwood'
  • another meant 'moon' previously distinguished in writing as "ຈັນທຣ໌" (from Skt. चन्द्र chandra), thus referring to the 'walled city of the moon'.

Other romanisations include "Viangchan" and "Wiangchan".
